Water under the bridge

River Pinn new year

Winter moves from wet, (pictured River Pinn at new year) to dry and freezing cold. Although when its cold with clear blue sky’s @ midday it’s glorious.

Sunderland are meandering both on and off the field. Fans are non too not happy with off field events in the cup game, moving season ticket holders, decorating Black cats bar plus appointment of the new Head Coach. Results are patchy at best. Transfers in the window absent. There is still time to turn it around but optimism is scarce. A young squad do make mistakes and would hopefully learn from them but the season is now in the balance. Its the hope I can’t stand.

Trying to work with both Rust and Python at present. Looking at Mara’s blog posts on the development of the inline-python crate, RustPython and PyO3. This Info world article covers PyO3. Also seen The Data Quarry::blog.

Summer 23
Summer 23

Just to say I am back posting after a period 9 months without. This was caused by a family event in the Spring and a Summer of beaches, walks and other family events.

Re Rust:-

I stopped rust work on Zero to Production in March 2023 due to a family event. I did return to it briefly in the summer to get to a logical stop point. Now before I resume I am now going through the The Rust book as a reminder of Rust, then when confident again will go back to Zero to Production.

Re Sunderland :-

Having failed to get promoted via the playoffs, we seem to have doubled down on the promising youngsters route, with mainly good results. Away form seems better than home. I attended another away win at QPR, but it is still early days.

Rust Nation UK 2023 conference

Rust Nation UK 23

Today I attended the Rust Nation UK 2023 conference. This was via the live link not in person. I had been looking forward to it all week. It was held at the Chiswell Street Brewery (formally Whitbread brewery) in the City of London, close to where I worked for a long time. Although I could have afforded the almost £500 to attend in person I could not justify it. So I had to make do with the live link and miss out on yesterdays tutorials. I saw the the following :

  • The opening address from Nell Shamrell-Harrington from Microsoft.
  • The talk on Rhai scripting with Rust by Jonathan Strong of Keyrock.
  • Lets get Rusty by Daniel Thompson-Yvetot of Tauri.
  • Tim McNamara of AWS author of Rust in Action.
  • Tobie Morgan Hitchcock of Surreal DB.
  • Senyo Simpson of Fly.io.
  • Jon Gjengeset on Living with Rust Long term. I had seen him prepare for this talk on YouTube.

I thought the whole event was great, Rust seems a good vibrant community. I hope the other talks from different tracks are available to view at a later point.

Zero to Production in Rust

Zero to Production in Rust

An opinionated introduction to backend development in rust.

Today I purchased this ebook having read a review from This Week in Rust 478. I agree with the comments in the review. I was looking for a more advanced Rust tutorial and was wanting something with Postgres database so this seems ideal. So looking forward exploring further similar to the blog and learning along the way.
